Yes, it was strategically planned for Fatih to stand exactly where it is today, and for many reasons. For starters, its bordered by the Golden Horn to the north, it overlooks the Marmara Sea to the south, and its western borders are defined by the Constantinople Walls, in which we still see standing to this day.

Fatih is a conservative and busy area and although it’s prominently Arabic families that reside there, I would say the international students & tourist attractions help balance it out to see people from all walks of life and cultures in the area. You certainly wouldn’t find any nightlife there 😉

However, of course due to it being a busy centre of education, historical buildings & commercial hubs, this has developed some congestion in the area. Together with traffic and limited parking spaces, Fatih isn’t the ideal place for cars. Drivers with limited patience would not have a nice time there on its narrow streets.

Fortunately, it’s for this reason that the local authorities have made sure that the Istanbul traffic network system is well connected to this area, making it easy to reach from anywhere in the city. It offers all means of transport such as buses, metro, and metrobus lines, that provide quick and easy transportation means for any journey whether near or far at an affordable price.

The Fatih Mosque

Because of Fatih’s historical value, many attraction points in the area receive tourists from all over the world. One of these main attractions points is The Fatih Mosque.

Between the period 1463 and 1470, in a desire for the area to become the centre of knowledge and faith after the conquest of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet al-Fatih ordered the construction of Al- Fatih Mosque and chose it a place within the heart of Constantinople.

This Mosque is one of the many mosques that were built in the Ottoman Empire era. It was named after the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih who conquered Constantinople in 1453. It is a great example of Turkish Islamic architecture in Istanbul and represents an imperative stage in the expansion of the old Turkish architecture.

The Fatih Mosque holds both religious and social features, it combines the legacy of the past with the brilliance of the present. It is an admirable architectural landmark to see & ponder upon that consists of two identical minarets. It’s minbar has hand-drawn baroque design decorations and a large courtyard surrounded by many columns and arches. The centre of the courtyard provides a dedicated place for ablution.

The shrine of Sultan Mehmed Fatih lies on the southern section of the building that is surrounded with an ornamental glass fence. The walls bordering the shrine are beautifully inscribed with verses of the Quran and the famous hadith regarding the conquering of Constantinople.

The Sultanahmet Mosque is one of the most important historical landmarks in Istanbul. It was built by Sultan Ahmet 1 who took over the throne in 1603 and sought to complete what previous Sultans had started by building mosques and towers on the hills of Istanbul. The mosque was seen as one of the largest achievements ever made and was opened for worship in 1617.

The Eminonu Area of Istanbul

The Eminonu area of Istanbul is one of the most marvellous places of tourism in the European side of Istanbul city, it is also of supreme importance due to being the main location for transporting to the Asian side of Istanbul City.

The Eminonu Municipality are proud to own this area boasting many beautiful & historical monuments with a breath-taking view of the Bosphorus, one of which is the New Eminonu Mosque. It overlooks the Istanbul seashore and is one of many treasured masterpieces the sultans of history left behind.

Just next to this mosque is the 2nd largest covered market in Istanbul after the Grand Bazaar, while the mosque itself holds the record of being the largest cemetery for the Ottoman sultans, as it contains the tomb of five of the Ottoman sultans, in addition to the tomb of Sultan Khadija Turhan who was credited with completing the building of the mosque.

The Istanbul Closed Market

The popular ‘closed market’ is also well known as the ‘covered market’ and it’s one of the oldest markets in Istanbul. It was first constructed during the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul and used as a stock exchange centre by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the year 1461 AD. He requested that all retailers be under one roof for ease and comfort for both the sellers as well as the buyers.

The market has about 4400 shops scattered within 80 streets and is popular for the abundance of its handcraftsmanship & design works.

Topkapi Palace was first recognised as one of the monuments that belonged to the historical areas in Istanbul by UNESCO before it became a world heritage site in 1985.

It is one of the largest historical palaces the country has ever known. Used as a Sultan residence place in the Ottoman Empire, the palace includes some of the most important Islamic holy relics many Muslims dreams to see, such as the sacred mantle (cloak) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his blessed sword.
